The Rabbit in Wonderland
The rabbit was
dozing. Suddenly, a girl in a Victorian apron dress ran close by
him. She stumbled over a root of a tree and fell down. Getting
up, she took a watch out of her apron pocket, looked at it and
got into a panic, saying"Oh dear! I shall be late!"
"What hurries you up so much, Miss?" said the rabbit.
"I shall be late for my birthday." said the girl.
"A birthday party is held, isn't it?"
"It isn't. My birthday leaves me behind. If so, I will fail to
be eight years old just as Humpty Dumpty said 'leave off at
seven'."
"All you have to do is to wait until Time comes to you."
"Never! It takes all the running you can do to keep in the
present state. I learnt it from the Red Queen."
The girl said so and began to run again. She jumped into
a rabbit-hole nearby. The rabbit followed her. The downward
slope in the rabbit-hole turned to a vertical well soon, and so
the rabbit and the girl went down together.
The falling speed accelerated gradually, and the walls
around them went upward at a ferocious speed. The rabbit asked
while falling. "Where in God's name are we falling towards?"
"Maybe, towards the beginning of the universe, or the end of it.
Or..."
"Or ...?"
"Or towards 'Now'!"
At that time, the rabbit woke up and found out that the
sluggish tortoise far away was going to reach the foot of the
hill.
